Hidden in Plain Sight

He looked at her with a sturdy, sad look. “How come, over all these years, nobody has noticed?” 
If that question surprised her, she didn’t show it.
“I guess I’m just good at hiding things.” She paused and looked lost for a moment. “It’s easy for people to miss the things they don’t want to see. I don’t blame them.”
The psychologist wrote something down, crossed it out and looked back up at her.
“Doesn’t that feel lonely? To hide so much of your life?”
Surprisingly, she laughed. But it was a joyless & forced. 
“It wasn’t like I had a choice.”
